It’s springtime and the flowers and trees are blooming. But how many of us take the time to stop and appreciate the beauty of life? Well, the practice of mindfulness is one way to become more aware not only of the physical surroundings, but also of your thoughts, behaviors, and body sensations. You may have already guessed that mindfulness has a basis in meditation. But, did you know that it has been used in the treatment of emotional difficulties for a long time?

Stressors and suffering are inevitable in everyone’s life. Mindfulness offers techniques to cope with life’s challenges, no matter what age − including children who are challenged by learning problems and other mental health issues.

 

What the research says…

Recent research has focused on establishing an effective treatment of mindfulness for children and adolescents. Mindfulness skills have been demonstrated to be effective at decreasing anxiety, stress, and behavior problems in school-aged children. Research studies demonstrate that teaching children mindfulness skills leads to improved academic functioning. There is also growing evidence that mindfulness therapy can decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity, while and increasing attention and self-esteem. Now, that’s impressive!

Mindfulness groups

Mindfulness groups are becoming more popular, and even fun. Activities and stories are used to teach and practice the skills of mindfulness. Goals include building awareness of thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
