Many children fall almost 3 months behind in math and reading skills in the summer

Don't let your child's brain stop learning this summer!

Choosing an activity to keep your child occupied for the summer can be a daunting task. Whether you pick a summer camp or a fun trip, don't let your child's brain stop learning this summer!

Self-management is all about learning how to: (1) Plan, (2) Execute your plan, (3) Evaluate the outcome, and (4) Use that information to develop better plans in the future. If your goal for the summer is to enhance your child's development, the Tarnow Center for Self-Management has special programs lined up for you.

The High School and College Launching Groups beginning mid-June prepares adolescents in high school to become good self-managers. This group will assist students to increase their self-awareness, define and learn skills to achieve their immediate and future goals, and contribute to life-skills development.

The goal of the College Assistance Program is to prepare young adults and students on their way to a college career to successfully complete the degree or program of their choosing by improving their self-management skills. Interventions for each student in this program will be tailored to their individual needs.

The Neurotherapy Summer Program uses neurotherapy, a non-invasive and non-medication intervention that is most often applied to symptoms of ADHD, anxiety disorders, and Asperger's Disorder. The neurotherapist will use enjoyable media such as movies, CDs/music, and computer games to train your child to control their brainwave patterns, making this type of treatment interesting for the individual.

Additionally, we have several groups for girls starting from 5th grade to the 12th grade. These groups will focus on social skills, transition to middle school, transition to high school and issues related to self-control and decision-making. We also have groups focused on the transition to high school.

Other popular programs at our center include the technologically revolutionary Cogmed, a program that assists students in improving their working memory; a skill needed to focus and organize all our actions, in and outside of school. Another popular program, Fast ForWord is a series of computer-delivered auditory programs that improves a student's language and reading skills, quickly. The Intensive Computer Summer Programs are geared toward the remediation of the underlying brain problem in learning disorders.

Lastly, the SMART Family System, a web-based behavioral management program, is designed to help parents and teachers manage their children's behaviors at home and at school, respectively. This program is available at our center throughout the year. Do not wait for the new academic year to begin. Avail of this program, unique to our center, today- to plan for a better tomorrow.
