Katherine A. O'Brien holds Master's and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston, where she pursued specialty training in the highly regarded Clinical Neuropsychology concentration. Dr. O'Brien earned her undergraduate degree with high distinction in Brain and Cognitive Science at the University of Rochester in upstate New York. She went on to work in the Neurologic Institute at Columbia University in New York City prior to pursuing her graduate studies. After finishing her internship training at the University of Alabama Birmingham Psychology Consortium, Dr. O'Brien completed a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology at Mentis Neuro Rehabilitation. Both graduate and internship training focused heavily on clinical neuropsychology, while also providing strong foundational knowledge and broad training in psychological assessment and intervention.

 

Dr. O’Brien has taken a lifespan approach to her training; working with diverse populations ranging from young children to the elderly in both residential and outpatient treatment settings. Her experience includes individual, group, and family therapy. She believes in partnering with her clients to meet their goals choosing therapeutic techniques based on the best available evidence from empirical research, which is then integrated into a thorough case formulation and applied with careful consideration of the client’s biological and environmental contributions to their cognitive status, functional behavior and therapeutic relationship. Dr. O’Brien’s primary theoretical orientation is cognitive-behavioral, though treatment choices are individually tailored. She often helps clients identify problematic thoughts and behaviors and provides the skills to help modify these behaviors and thought patterns into more adaptive ones. Therapy tends to be solution-focused and goal-directed.

 

Dr. O’Brien is currently licensed in the state of Kansas and is in the process of obtaining dual licensure in the state of Texas. She is credentialed by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. Dr. O’Brien’s organizational memberships include American Psychological Association, International Neuropsychological Society, Texas Psychological Association, and Houston Neuropsychological Society.
