The SMART Family System is a web-based software program designed to equip parents with the tools necessary to raise responsible and independent children. Transitions in a young person's life can be particularly challenging, such as entering middle school, high school or college. These new stages require an additional level of self-management skills. For children who have attention disorders, learning problems, or other challenges, successful transitions into new stages may require special assistance. Our summer groups are designed to prepare them for the next stage. Through adequate preparation, difficulties are prevented, and every child can experience a successful transition.
Transition from elementary to middle school is far more than an increase in grade level – it represents a change in academic environment that coincides with important developmental changes. During this transition children are experiencing greater self-consciousness, a growth in critical and complex thinking, and an increase in the importance of peer relationships. At the same time, they are entering a new learning environment that involves a larger school with new children, different classrooms and teachers for each subject, and greater responsibility of assignments, personal supplies, and self-organization. These simultaneous changes make this transition a time of difficulty for many children.

Beginning high school is a major change for young people. Academically, high school requires a higher level of class preparation, study skills, and time management. Socially, the high school years are a time of important change in the maturity of peer and romantic relationships. During this time, adolescents are also developing a new sense of self, an identity separate from their parents. Some high school students will also enter the work world through part-time or summer employment. The transition to high school requires increased self-management skills in order to successfully negotiate the challenges of school, work, family life, and social relationships.
