SERVICES/PROGRAMSMind/Body Medicine "Patients learn to change their responses and take positive steps in their own health care" Many physical illnesses can be cured and or improved through new psychosocial techniques that allow patients to become active participants in their own health and well-being. Participants in the Mind Body Medicine Program learn to "listen" to their bodies and to identify thoughts and emotions that increase their symptoms. Patients learn to change their responses and take positive steps in their own health care. Individual, family or group counseling teaches stress management, relaxation techniques and imagery for healing and pain control, and teaches, as well, the importance of social support. Learning how better to cope with an illness is a major step in improving the quality of life and reducing the severity of the illness. Appropriate diagnosis for treatment in the program includes: migraine headache; chronic muscle pain; Tourette's Syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, tension headache, fibromyalgia, seizure disorder, chronic fatigue, asthma, panic disorder, insomnia, and infertility. Biofeedback training can also be extremely useful in training people with ADD to increase their ability to sustain focused attention. |
