Clinical TrialsThe Tarnow Research Institute
Psychiatry has had a tremendous growth in understanding the biological aspects of mental illness. This has come about as the result of emphasis on researching the brain mechanisms. In 1990, President Bush declared the Decade of the Brain. The National Institute vigorously pursued this agenda. New technology was created to study the workings of the brain. As a result many new treatments have been developed along with the explosion in understanding. The Tarnow Center has always taken a scientific approach to the solution of psychiatric, psychological, learning and developmental disorders, family problems, and other mental health issues. This is a result of Dr. Tarnow's dedication to innovation, teaching, and research in academic centers. Only through research can we move the field to its next level and bring better treatments to the community. It is essential to have extensive research to guide our decisions. In the past, the field of psychiatry suffered because of the lack of research, especially because of the complexity of the brain, lack of good measures, and the very subjective nature of human behavior. Children have suffered most as a result of the lack of research data. Most medications are not tested in children because of the complexity, ethics, and cost of research. Physicians must infer from the adult research how to use medications in children. Unfortunately our society has viewed children as little adults. However, we keep finding out through research how far from reality this really is. Therefore, we at the Tarnow Center are very interested in educating our community about the uniqueness of children. Thus, we are dedicated to participating and pushing the needs of child research to the forefront. We believe that having special training with children improves not only our adult treatments but also gives us a special understanding when doing adult research. There are few centers that have the breath of clinicians and researchers working together so intimately. Our research facility is unique, as it is a large private practice of psychiatry with five PhD's, a speech and language therapist, a licensed practical counselor, a social worker and an educational diagnostician. Eighty percent of our clients are referred by past clients and are referred to me, a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, as well as our other two psychiatrists, one of whom is board-certified in general, child and adolescent psychiatry, and one who is a board certified psychiatrist. All three of us have academic experience and continue to be on the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas Medical School at Houston. We are well known in the Houston community as being a premier outpatient facility for the interdisciplinary assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. Our major focus is on biological disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette's Disorder, Recurrent Depression, PTSD, PDD, and Clinical Anxiety Disorders, We follow approximately 8,000 clients who have come to our facility for a number of years. Our clients are very loyal and because of the chronic nature of some of their problems, we have been seeing some of them over their lifespan. We have already done clinical trials in the areas of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression and Schizophrenia. Our site is unique because we have the ability to bring in very dedicated and loyal patients, who we follow for long periods of time. Our clients are predominantly upper middle to upper class, many of which belong to professional families. Our patients follow through, they are compliant, and as a result we have a very low dropout rate. Jay D. Tarnow, M.D. |
